Hmmm… thought so! It’s SO easy to do, right?
You open up your e-mail attachment, hit SAVE or SAVE AS and away you go. There you are, working merrily away, sometimes for HOURS and then POW! When you try to find the document again, it’s not in the folder you thought it was.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Outlook 2016 For Mac Standalone
You curse your computer and threaten it with physical violence (oh! is that just me?). Then, just as you’re about to lose the will to live and start over, it hits you.
You forgot to change the folder destination!
Instead of saving it where you thought you had, you’d actually saved your document into Outlook’s temporary folder.
PHEW!!!
All you have to do is retrieve it from the Outlook Temp folder and move it to where you wanted it in the first place.
Voilà! Problem solved.
But hold on a minute. You’re using a mac. Where IS the Outlook Temp folder?
If, like me, you’re a multi-platform user, you’re probably quite familiar with locating temporary files on Windows. But on a mac, there are LOADS of hidden folders, including “TemporaryItems”, which is where your Outlook Temp Folder lives.
Why it would be hidden, I have no idea. It seems odd to me, but there you go! Maybe another Apple user can answer that question.
Anyway, the Outlook Temp folder is located in your Library’s “Caches” folder, although you might not be able to access it in the normal way, i.e. via Macintosh HD/Library/Caches.
But never fear, Sue is here!
- Open a finder window
- In the Finder Menu bar (at the top of your screen), select “Go”.
- And scroll down to “Go to Folder…”
- Type the folder location “~/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/Outlook Temp” and click “Go”.
Hey presto! You’re in the Outlook Temp folder!
Inside the Outlook Temp folder, you’ll see the document you’ve inadvertently saved there, which you can then move to where it needs to be.
Yay!

And what about all those hidden folders I mentioned?
- Open a Finder window.
- Click on the “Go” menu as before, then hold down the Option (Alt) key and “Library” will magically appear within the list of folders.
(Apologies for the dodgy photography, the mac wouldn’t take a screen shot during the command, so I had to snap it with the iPhone in one hand, whilst trying to click and press at the same time! I know they said being a PA was all about juggling tasks, but this is ridiculous!)
- While holding down the Alt key, scroll down and click on “Library” and you’ll now be able to see a whole host of folders you never knew you had!
(No photo of this step, I’m afraid as I couldn’t take a photo and perform the command simultaneously. I’m good, but I ain’t THAT good!)
